Summit,Jegs etc,etc sell U-joints for this purpose.Probably need 2 U-joints to accomplish this. My question is. Does each joint have to be supported and how do I do this? Thanks in advance for any help. I have seen street rods at shows with steering systems that have multiple U-joints and really snake around their obstacles.

You should be able to learn all you need to know from them. Things to know...there is a max. angle for a u-joint, 37 degrees if I remember correctly. One u-joint, no support needed, two then yes. You will most likely need one at your steering box, this counts. Welding on the steering shaft is a no-no, but have seen it many times. Pay close attention to such things as spline count at your steering box, do you need a vibration damper aka rag joint, and several others.

It sounds like you might be thinking about using one on a straight-axle setup, and there can be some serious safety concerns with that type of system. It sounds like you might be thinking about using one on a straight-axle setup. Jerry,Weeds is using a Scott Danforth IFS. Weeds like beltfed mentions any more than two UJs and you'll need a support bearing,Borgesson do them as do Summit racing. Here's how I did mine. Steering hook-up. I should add I replaced the bolts with grade 8s and have since added a gusset from the bracket to the top of the chassis since this pic was taken,it steers straight and smooth...

Like Jock says I am using Scott Danforths crossmember and the R&P ends up in front of the crossmember. The splined input shaft points almost right at the drivers side manifold but I think there is room to get around it with the proper use of U-joints and supports. I suspected the joints needed to be supported but I didn't know for sure so that was my question. Thanks for any advice you can give me.
Jock, thanks also for your reply and the pics. It gives me an idea or 2 on how to accomplish this. Might have to wait until spring tho as it is getting pretty cold here in badgerland and if it snows i'll be waiting until spring for sure.
