Drove my truck today and amp gauge shows charging max all the time. Battery was almost 5 years old so I replaced it. Same charging status with new battery. New battery showing 13 plus volts with engine off. In the past at start up, amp gauge would be in the middle or minus until engine rpm rose up, then show plus charge. So, can the alternator fail in the "charge only" position? Alternator is 7 years old but not many miles on it. One of these: http://www.oldchevytrucks.com/cart/index.asp?sdes=rehp136Can I buy one at a FLAPS? Thanks for any input. If the regulator supplies full voltage to the field coils the alternator will go into full current output and severely overcharge the battery. A shorted power transistor in the regulator will full-field it. At speeds above idle, the voltage can go to 20+ volts or more. Jerry

If it goes much over 14 volts the regulator is bad like Lincoln says. Repair it emidiatly or you will damage the bat. & electrical components. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. If it is a 3 wire I can put a new reg. in it for you. I'm right over there in Northmoor. George They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though.
