I will be needing to remove and replace both check valves. I read in another thread a reference to some potential difficulty in doing this. I tried to order the special tool to do this from Zenith when ordering some other rebuild parts, but was told that it was no longer available. How can I accomplish this using commonly available tools without messing up the bowl casting? Thanks!

You can make a tool that will suffice.

Call, and I will explain how. Then, if you wish, you may type the method here.

Get a 3 or 4 inch drywall screw. Screw into the center of the check valve, pull out.

That doesn't sound too complicated.

Jon recommended making a small slidehammer that consists of 1) a machine screw to thread into the checkvalve, brazed onto 2) a 3/16"X6" long bolt to serve as the shaft, with 3) a 1/4" nut slid over the screw-and-bolt assembly to serve as the sliding weight. That sounds a lot like my mental picture of the factory tool described in the GMC shop manual. Thanks, Jon.
