On the 216, does the front main bearing have 4 bolts? Having difficulty removing.
Thanks. Scott

Yes. The cap is held on with two vertical and two horizontal bolts.

Thanks guys go it off. Want to replace the main and rod bearings. I have a 53, been checking around and have been asked if I have a 216 or 235 engine. Thought it was a 216. engine serial number by dip stick does not seem to match numbers I have found on line. Does it matter 216 or 235 for the bearings and can you recommend a vender? Thanks, Scott

If your engine is a '53 it won't have rod bearing inserts, you can have your rods machined for insert bearings.

Scott, you have your same questions asked in to many posts.
I have addressed this in one of your other posts.

Scott,

I do not have any experience with an engine older than 1948.

The Shop Manual describes a complex procedure for main bearing replacement (compared to later engines).

The rods have babbitted bearings - the bearing is an integral part of the rod assembly. These types of rods were used up into 1953. I bought new rods to match my crankshaft - that was a long time ago.

Someone who has rebuilt one of those engines (in modern times) will reply.

I would like to add at this time that it would be a miracle if the crank is not ruined/ needing reground.
Running without oil pressure for 10 minutes can do a lot of damage to it.
You could be lucky but I would think about that 235 swap you mentioned.

Maybe that explains why I cannot turn the engine by hand using a crow bar..despite all the bearings removed, main and rod, and able to turn the flywheel with pry bar but not the crank...
