A slower turning, bigger surface grinder/pad combination would work better. The small angle grinders can get too agressive and create a lot of heat and remove too much material unless you watch really close. Kevin Tetz at www.paintucation.com has an excellent video on metal prep and rust repair that you might want to consider purchasing. All of his videos are excellent info. The only thing I have found that will hold up at that speed and cut both paint and rust is a braided wire cup brush. Straight-bristle wire brushes will fly apart and leave you picking wires out of your legs and arms. Most sanding disks are not balanced for high speed, and will buck and gouge or become shrapnel. I haven't used them, but have seen them in Eastwood's catalog.

Great for cleaning up old stuck on gaskets. Also there are different versions for steel or aluminum. and different sizes.
There is no mechanical problem so difficult that it can not be overcome by brute force and ignorance.
