Am rebuilding the brakes: This truck will never carry a load again and hardly be driven any highway distance.

1. Would I be able to get along without a booster and have adequate braking with the light use as described above?

2. If I were to install a boost system.....the old is costly to rebuild....how about installing some newer power brake that is easy to adapt to the present brake system. I'll bet some street rod folks have already discovered something that works.......I hope!

Hy rviator, welcome, you could run the system without a booster, but that would make the pedal effort required to stop very heavy. There are kits out there to put boosted brakes in the stock location under the floor for the slightly newer trucks (1948 and newer), but I haven't seen such a kit for your year. Does you master cylinder mount to the side of the transmission and do your pedals mount to the bellhousing?

For the cost of all the new stuff to convert your truck you could just rebuild what you have and drive it for another 50 years...

Agreed^^^, I rebuilt the brakes on my 42 1.5, and they could put you through the window if you stand hard enough.

I agree with all of the above, I just finished this weekend the brakes on my 47 2 ton without hydro-vac and the peddle is hard and stayed up all weekend without any leakage, I rebuilt the wheel cyls. and a new master, adjusted all the shoes until they rubbed and then backed off. works great and my E-brake doesn't pull all the way back anymore. I like it!.

Thanks,

Thanks......that is great to know. Am guessing that you don't find the brake pedal to difficult to push for a reasonable stopping ability....?
Thanks.....!!

pedal is no problem, even when I loaded the truck with dirt, ya, you know theres a load but not bad at all, my other 47 has a booster and it stops just as good as this truck with a tad easier pedal.
