Mikey, bring your fire pit. I may be able to add to the burn pile. As chilly as it has been a toasty fire will be awesome!

Not a good idea, Gents ...

I don't want to be a nattering nabob of negativity, but moving firewood across a state line is very much frowned upon

In fact, St. Mary's County is a known infestation area for Emerald Ash Borers My guess is that the Virginians don't need any of those brought in.

More info on pests in oak firewood

Additionally, movement of firewood is considered to be a leading vector for the transmission of Sudden Oak Death (a form of the fungus Phytophthora which is a particularly nasty and pervasive pest that costs farmers like me thousands of dollars annually in crop loss, fungicide purchase, etc). Once Phytophthora gets in your soil, you've got it -- you can't eradicate it, only control it -- to a degree. I've got it here and it's the leading cause of my crop loss.

As a tree guy, I just thought we'd all want to be responsible about this and find a more local source for our firewood... (the experts agree that the recommended course of action is to source your firewood from within a 50-mile radius of the campsite) This isn't funny or trivial, my Brothers. To us farmers, invasive pests are a very serious matter.

Thanks,
John

If Josh still has a lot of oak on the ground, we can transport it to my house smile

Sounds like this isn't new information. I believe we've had a fire pit most if not all of the ten years of Winchester, thankfully 'The Big Fella' from West Virginia brought the wood most years, AFAIK, he's within 50 clicks (kilometers).

I'm about 120 miles away and only bringing the car. Could bring a little firewood if no one closer can?

Just reserved a room at the Holiday Inn. The website puts it at about 5 miles from the show. I can bring the furniture from the Holiday Inn and we could see if it burns ? Only 5 miles ? I had to say it.....

Joe,

As far as I know you are not a rock star so you can't be burning motel/hotel furniture. Although it is for a good cause.

Thanks,

Nattering Nabob again ... Besides, it's probably that poly laminate stuff that will kill us all from the toxic fumes ...

Ok so we can't burn wood from Maryland, we can't burn the hotel furniture because of some polywolly laminate sumpin or other, what are we going to burn?? JM, give Blaine a buzz, maybe he can hook is up....I here there is a cold front moving in.

FYI-I will be bring a big ol box of burgers from the meat man and a box of dogs too (plus the nessesaary buns and condiments) for the Stovebolt Banquet on Saturday night. It seems as though the meal has become somewhat of a smorgasbord so bring whatever you want to contribute if you want.

Larry, look forward to meeting you. Oh and don't worry about the Nattering Naboob, he's not so bad in person....

From the desk of yer prez..........

Presidential Award (extra brand spanking new shop rag) goes to those that bring old furniture to burn, wood only, no pads, springs, metal, MUST BE REDUCED TO FIRE PIT SIZE TO BURN (2 ft in length) etc. Now that should sweeten the deal!

Regards,

Cosmo

I did think to suggest burning the ADs but then thought better of a comment like that.

Mikey -- Well you remember what he did (with gasoline) to Peggy's diesel 6x4 Gator ... Seems Karma can be a real Bee-Otch sometimes ...

Suppose you were to take 5 gallons of diesel fuel and sprinkle it all over a truck ... throw a match to it ... the heat ... paint ... upholstery ... You getting the picture? Now imagine driving that truck ...
well, you'll see it in a couple of days ...

I shall say no more. Some things must be seen to be ascertained properly ... I do know that the "certain friend from VA" is known to turn trucks into national award winners before selling them. This K10, now that it's in Hambone's possession, is -- how shall I put this delicately -- no national award winner ... I will leave you to draw your own conclusions.

And to think of the reaction should I have mentioned the ADs as fuel. I did not go that far, but the dust is scattered now so I would think it only a few moments before Marlow brings out his broom to sweep things up. AND yes, it has over 300 SOMD miles.

"Hey Marlow --- Ya know you're missin' a lug bolt??"

Ya just had to drag ME and the prince of vintage iron, The Art Decos into this?! You know, Art Deco, the the obvious choice for the the new Stovebolt logo that I am proudly wearing?

Ha, shame on you. We all know who owns the only actual "fire" truck here. Mikey, don't forget the marshmallows, we might not have any fire wood to burn but it sounds like we will have plenty of charred 60-66 to toast on....

I hope the '66 survived the "event". I'm not sure when I'll get to Winchester, but I plan on coming up to see my brothers.

As for fire building, it's 34 degrees at my house right now...

I'm camping on the Shenandoah River this week and did use the furnace last night. You will need firewood!

Will try to get over there sometime. Don't know when yet...maybe Thursday???

You're doing a good thing for the forests of the Old Dominion, Mike!

John -- Have a good trip -- too bad we won't catch up with you this time. Billy will be there Thursday morning so be sure to stop in and say hey -- he'll be set up there just inside the truck entrance (second entrance as you come south from the exit.)

John

John, since you are coming from the north, take exit 321 then a mile South down Rt.11, we'll be the second entrance, this is easier and shorter than back tracking.

We'll see how things go some freezers are pretty quick loading others are not. A fried had called yesterday offered me the chance to take one of his trucks over but schedule wouldn't allow it. Then I realized my route was going to take me right by there so maybe it will work out. Thanks for the routing instructions.
