I like having the manual choke on the dash, so yesterday the extra auto choke hardware came off, and I will be making some simple hardware a lá the old Rochester B to hook to the manual cable.
The auto choke mechanism had a steel vacuum line running to it from the base of the carb. I have tried to pull it out from the base, but no luck. How might I remove this vacuum line and plug the hole? Can I just stuff JB weld in the open end and leave the tube in place?

(1) remove the throttle body from the rest of the carburetor
(2) heat the throttle body in an old oven to the maximum temp of the oven
(3) remove the throttle body from the oven, and using an acetelyne torch, heat the are around the tube until cherry red
(4) SET THE THROTTLE BODY ASIDE AND GO DO SOMETHING ELSE FOR 30 MINUTES!
(5) once the throttle body has completely cooled (NO QUENCHING ALLOWED), find a screw or nail that will just fit inside the tube.
(6) with the object inserted into the tube, clamp the tube and object with a pair of vise-grips.
(7) gently turn the vise-grips, the tube will come right out
(8) DON'T USE JB-WELD! if you are a fisherman, find a split shot lead sinker somewhat larger than the hole, and with a drift punch and hammer, insert the lead into the hole. If you are not a fisherman, surely you have a friend that is; or a $2. pack of sinkers from a discount store.
DO NOT USE THIS TECHNIQUE ON ALUMINUM OR ZINC ALLOY BODIES!!!

What's to do when one has an aluminum or zinc body? Can one stuff some lead into the end of the tube? Maybe cut it off first?
I do have a lot of lead on hand in my business, that won't be a problem.
What I do not have is a torch. Hmm

I posted the caviat to prevent some enthusiast from trying this method on other carburetors.
There ARE ways to remove the tubes from aluminum or zinc alloy; but require special tools, lots of practice on junk castings, OR a lot of luck. With no offense meant, rather than get someone in trouble, will not answer this question.
Stromberg, Zenith and Rochester used lead balls of varying sizes. Carter used aluminum and brass tapered plugs.
