I need a custom dual exhaust and the one shop I checked with said $650 + labor for installing the split headers.

I used a couple of different shops in the area but like Muffler King in Kirkland. The owner is a car guy and really appreciates those of us that are keeping this hobby alive. Don't know if his prices will be better than your prior bid.
Do you already have the headers? Fentons or? What diameter exhaust and mufflers are you planning to use? | | | | | Joined: Mar 2014 Posts: 154 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2014 Posts: 154 | Thanks, I'll give Muffler King a call. The previous bid I got from Dan Fast in Bellevue just seemed way too high. That's why I was thinking of going out of town to a lower-overhead shop.
I already have the Fenton headers. My wife bought them for me from Chev's of the 40's. I'm thinking I want like 1-3/4 inch pipe, based on what I've read, and glass packs like Smitty's, straight out the back with no X-pipe.
Certainly open to suggestions from those with experience.

My mistake was using Flo Pro mufflers (like Flowmasters). They sound good with a V8 but not so much with the straight 6. I used 2 inch exhaust out the back with no crossover.
Are you planning to heat the intake like the original manifold does? | | | | | Joined: Mar 2014 Posts: 154 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2014 Posts: 154 | I wondered about the exhaust & intake manifolds being so close together. In today's higher compression engines, it's not good for the intake charge to be heated. Are you saying that's by design on these old engines? I had no idea, and therefore I had no plans on heating the intake.

And I don't know of any good muffler shops, I do know to avoid Walts. And $650 is about the going rate around here. If you want a decent exhaust that is. | | | | | Joined: May 2005 Posts: 85 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: May 2005 Posts: 85 | Hi Greg,
There are some good discussions on the site about why and how to heat the intake with Fenton headers. The main reason I went with a split factory manifold was to avoid messing with it but many folks have used Fentons with great success. | | |
