Sometime ago I purchased an electric wiper replacement for my 1/2 ton GMC pickup (12 volt system.

It has never worked right, it is very slow and will only operate with one wiper blade, two blades stop it dead...

Also will not work when it rains can not wipe water off.

I have tried many times to adjust the linkage to no avail. I can easily stop the motor with my hand.

Vendor says it has been to long since I purchased the 2 speed wiper motor to have it warrantied.

I will have to buy a new one for this winter. Any ideas on where to buy a good electric wiper motor system?

not sure what brand you're finding poor, but NewPort makes units I've been happy with, available at many of the vendors

I used the New Port unit also. Good customer service too.

Oops, didn't notice that Bill's "Newport" was already a link.

I believe the one in my truck is a Newport also.

You might want to take out the wiper pivots out of the cowl. The drag on your motor could be those.

Make sure you have a good ground. Try adding a jumper from the battery negative post directly to the wiper motor body and see if it works better.

I bought a 2-speed electric motor and switch for my 57 GMC. Got it from truckandcarshop.com $180. It fit perfect and is very strong. You cannot stop it with your hand. Not sure what brand they sell, it may be a Counterpart.
If I had a complaint, it would be that the switch is a little hard turn between positions. But I expect that to get better with use. At least it is chrome and looks like the original switch.
Have you tried un-hooking all the linkage from the motor, to see how strong it is then? Might be some binding somewhere?

If you end up having to purchase another motor, my suggestion would be to consider a NEWPORT brand. I installed one (12V, 2 speed)in my 54 3100 and am very pleased with it.

Good Luck

sfsutton,

Do you have an original-style radio, with the speaker on top of the radio?

Newport offers two versions

One will clear the choke cable the other will not.

Thanks for all the input...I will try the Newport wiper motor setup.

No Radio installed...yet.

I can always drop the choke cable to the lower hole for throttle cable or go to automatic choke...:)

Thanks

Not sure
But here's a pic of one installed, looks like it won't be an issue if you get the one designed to clear the choke cable

My question, above, about the Newport (or any other) after-market electric-wiper working with a radio was directed to sfsutton.

The 1954/55 Chevrolet (not 54/55 GMC) truck's radio speaker is mounted on top of the radio, and the speaker interferes with the installation of aftermarket electric wipers. The original 54/55 GM 6v electric wiper does not interfere, but holes have to be drilled through the top of the dash.

47-53 radios' speakers are below the radio.

Thank you DADS50's son (I presume).

WOW! I guess I'm the only one with problems with the Newport wiper. frown The main issue is slack in the output shaft that prevents a full sweep or fully return to the park position. I got fed up with it last week and bought the rear wiper motor from an early 90's Blazer for $20 and mounted it to the Newport bracket & it works great. Only drawback is it's single speed.

That is the first complaint I've heard of the Newport wiper Robert. I bought and installed my wipers from LMC or Chevy Duty before I knew about the Newport product. However I've had no trouble with what I've got. No orig. radio but I do have air conditioning vents at the old radio speaker and but no fit problems.
