take the current ratio (eg 4.10), and divide by the new ratio (eg 3.73). The result multiplied by your current speed at a given RPM (eg 50 mph @ 2700) will give you the new speed.
4.10/3.73=1.099
1.099*50=55 mph @ 2700.
This doesn't guarantee that your engine will be able to turn 2700 with the new rear, but it is a simple conversion for the numbers.
Current fleet (subject to change w/o notice) \'49 GMC 3/4-Ton , 60 Austin Healey Frog-eye Sprite (some assembly required), 2011 Dodge Avenger, 2015 Jeep Cherokee. No, they don't all run. My other ride is a (B737)no, (B767)no, A320.... Update... was Embraer E190, now Boeing B787. Knowledge is a wonderful thing, but ignorance means you don't know you can't do something.

#10484 05/01/2004 4:27 AM | Joined: Jan 2002 Posts: 2,839 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2002 Posts: 2,839 | I did it to my '50 recently and notice that I'm now shifting from 3rd to 4th around 7-8 mph faster and I've been caught traveling down the highway between 60-65 whereas it use to be around 55 max.
This is all based upon just listening to the engine at shift points and when I feel I am reaching top speed.
Though it's a LOT of work, it's great to have that extra speed available.

So the difference will be not as great as with the earlier years. Secondly, call Patrick's there is a small part you need from an earlier torque tube for your 54 unit to accept the kit. I forgot the name of the part. Something like muffler bearing...

Cleaned up everything myself then had the Gear Shop install the ring/pinion and set it up for me. They charged me 2 hours shop time. Got it all back in the truck (55.1 3100)this weekend. Those calculators will give you a good idea what to expect. I changed rear end and tire size (a little smaller) at the same time. The net gain at 55 mph was 2650 rpm to 2300 rpm and NO MORE singing rear end. It sang until catastrophic failure, blow up, bang, crunch, instant lock up at 50 mph, HANG ON, BIG flat spots on the rear rubber. Like the old saying..... It ain't over til the fat rubbers sing Fix it before it goes too far!!
