I have a 54 GMC with factory signal lights and need a wiring diagram to
finish my wiring. I found the wiring diagram for the signal light switch which was helpful but I did not understand what ribbed and plain was all about unless that was the color. I bought a Jim Carter wiring harness for a 54 GMC which was good except there is not much detail on connecting the signal light wires into the tail and stop lights . I think you need to tie into the brake light switch.Anyway a good factory wiring diagram on the signal lights would be helpful.

I just looked in my factory service manual for the 54 GMC. I printed the wiring diagram and looked through the electrical lighting section and found nothing on directional signals or signal lights . Not a thing , like they did not exist . Chevrolet manual the same. Hard to believe.

Steve,

I doubt of the Jim Carter or Classic Parts wiring harnesses come with the multi-lead wiring strip/ribbon that goes in the steering column (that wiring comes with the signal-switch that goes inside the cup under the steering wheel).

Both vendors supply extra wiring for signals, because most people use after-market signals, not the optional/accessory GM signal assembly.

The Shop Manual would not show installation information for options/accessories.

Here is a link to 1954 GM optional signal installation and wiring for a Suburban. The wiring for other trucks in 54/55st would be the same.

Steve,

On your question a ribbed wire has a raised line (rib) running on a side over its entire length, if you rub your finger along it you would feel the raised area.
