Hi,

To hopefully avoid the Summit Racing buy/return/buy another one/return routine I have been in lately, can anyone tell me what cover to buy for a newer (1996) SBC connected to the original SM420 Muncie 4 speed on my 56? Is it 2 piece or 1 piece? My preference is for plain stamped steel that I can paint. Thanks!

The original '56 V8 truck bellhousing uses a 2-piece cover. The vertical cover piece has a hole in it allowing the starter to pass through.

Hy Grandpa's 56, the proper cover would depend more on which bellhousing you're using rather than the age of the small block it's bolted to. The older cast iron bellhousings used two pieces a vertical piece that has a hole for the starter to pass through that Mike B mentioned, the other piece is a 1/8 circle that bolts to the flat bottom surface of the bellhousing, hope that helps.

Hi,

The bellhousing # is 3815891, original to a 63-66 truck. Is a wrecking yard my best bet for the covers?

Thanks.

Hy Grandpa's 56, yes the wrecking yards or post an ad in the parts wanted column farther down the page on this site, hope that helps.
