The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Driveline Torque tube Drive Pinion removal

I am pulling apart my torque tube rearend looking for the bearing missing the pieces I found in the bottom of the housing.
I am now to the Drive pinion/pinion shaft assembly. Is pulling the assembly as easy as removing the front pinion bearing retaining screw? Or do I need to remove the torque tube from the housing?
I think it is the rear pinion bearing which is the problem.

Hi, John, Go to teck tips for 3:55 ring gear instalation. If you are in that deap, it is a good idea to install the 3:55 ring gear set and get the installation package with new bearings and seals and gaskets. Thats what I did on my 49 and I am happy with it. On a Canadain truck you will have to have a machine shop slot the new ring gear mounting holes to match the carrier. Take in the old ring gear with the new one when you go to the machine shop and while you are in there install a new front bushing. PS My boss at work has a saying - In for a dime, in for a dollar.

Thanks Hippy. It has the 3:55 from the previous owner, wouldn't think the bearings could be gone so soon but I have to find out.
I was thinking too, that maybe the crap was in there before and it didn't get cleared out??
My saying is "In for a dime, in for a hundred dollars" seems that way with these trucks.
