It's gettin' hot down here and my '46, 1/2 ton doesn't have airconditioning! The previous owner sealed the windshield shut with caulk or some kind of silicone. I see in some catalogs that I can get a crank assembly rebuilt if I send in a core with a good "tongue". Does anybody out there have a good outfit that I can use or send in as a core? What should I look out for when puttin' on new winshield rubber and the crank assembly? Thanks, Jacques

Make sure the edge of the windshield frame doesn't have rust buildup in the channel where the rubber goes. There are 2 drain holes, one on each side of the cab corners, bottom of the windshield inner side, that should be opened. I didn't open mine because of not knowing about them, but haven't had any leak problems somehow. Good luck on finding a crank assembly. If you get one installed, don't try to crank it open at speeds above 20mph. I did that and now have to help push the window out because of bad gear teeth. It will close at any speed though,lol.

The hinges at the top of the windshield usually sieze up from not cranking it out for a long time. Make sure the windshield swings in and out easily, don't force and bend the metal.A tip from Tony the hack, if the truck is a driver, a select piece of wood will hold open the glass just fine. A tapered piece allows fine adjustment.use a piece of wire and a ffew screws to bind the wire around, to tie the window closed.

Thanks for the info, guys. What's the tongue that they refer to in the catalog? Is it part of the crank out assemblly?

The tongue is a strip of stainless about 1 1/2" X 6" that has a row of square holes down the center of it ,, it attaches directly to the w/screen frame and is driven by the gear ( the soft diecast bit that wears / brakes ) when you crank the wind out handle.

I got one from jim carter.It seems to be a good replacement.
