I mess around with T5 transmissions and own several. They seem to be affordable and re-buildable. They can be modified for many applications.

I'll get right to the point. Using a Jeep 10 spline T5 input shaft in place of the stock S10 input shaft is a BEAUTIFUL solution and IMPROVEMENT to the T5 for use in old trucks. Read more background below.

Jeep IS on right - S10 shaft on left

Jeep shaft marked at 8.75"

Jeep shaft in place (Since this is a trial fitment, I did not install a bearing on the Jeep shaft).

Jeep shaft installed with bearing retainer with a shorter sleeve.

My 10 spline clutch package matches

I think I have the clutch disc on backwards, but you understand.

Last night I did a swap that I read about here on the Stovebolt. I don't know who to give credit to, but this is a really nice solution to an old problem.

The S10 T5 has an input shaft that is about 5/8" too long to use in an older Chevy truck with the V8 bell housing. Another problem is that the S10 IS splines are not cut very far along the length of the shaft. To overcome these 2 problems, different vendors have designed adapter plates to back the T5 away from the bell about 1/2". That solves the problem. Buy an S10 T5 + adapter plate + an Astro van clutch kit and you pretty much have what you need.

The Jeep shaft swap idea has several advantages over the adapter plate.

1. New Jeep shaft and bearing is less than $90 (Adapter plate is $160)
2. Use the original 10 spline clutch kit. No Astro van kit to search for.
3. The Jeep shaft is thicker (i.e. stronger) than the S10 shaft.
4. Will work with all S10 T5s with 21 gear teeth, even a WC T5 if you use a brass blocker ring.
5. This works because the splines on the Jeep shaft are cut further along the length of the shaft than the S10 splines.
I plan to do a DIY thread on my BLOG. More later.

Where is the shifter located on Jeep T-5, compared to the S-10 T-5?

I really don't know where the Jeep shifter is located. I'm not sure what you're getting at. This swap uses a brand new Jeep input shaft, available for about $70, but nothing else from the Jeep T5. Please help me understand what concern you have.

Lugnutz is just changing the input shaft.

This means you don't need an adapter plate or you don't have to shorten the input shaft and the collar that the throwout bearing rides on.

It should be a good solution--especially from the clutch standpoint. The Astro van clutch came in 2 sizes...9 1/8 inch and 11 inch. I've had two clutch guys tell me they would be happy to never see or sell another one of the 9 1/8 inch clutches. From their comments, it sounds like that particular disk is bad news from the word go. One of them said you would be better advised to have the original GM part rebuilt.

The 11 inch Astro model is fine but more scarce and more costly. To use the 11 inch clutch, you must locate a 235 flywheel made for an 11 inch clutch. If you live in the DFW area, you already know there aren't many around here. The original: http://tinyurl.com/na9akp9 And the 11 inch: http://tinyurl.com/ntnqcwp (prior to having it resurfaced).

The Jeep shaft will need to be shortened. The S10 and Jeep shafts measure about 9.25", which is about 1/2" too long. The V8 Camaro shaft measures 8.75" and is the correct length. A Camaro shaft has 24 gear teeth and will not swap into an S10. That would be the best solution of all, but it doesn't work.

The original S10 shaft sleeve will also need to be trimmed back so that the Jeep splines are fully exposed. The photo below shows a Camaro sleeve (shorter than the S10 sleeve) which is about the right size. Just trim off enough of the S10 sleeve so the end of the sleeve won't contact the pressure plate fingers. The Camaro sleeve is about 2 + 5/8". However, trimming the S10 back to just a bit under 3" is probably good enough.

V8 Camaro shaft = 8.75" next to S10 shaft = 9.25"

Jeep and S10 shafts both = 9.25"

Mark and cut Jeep shaft at 8.75" - make sure to chamfer the end.

Do you have a part # for the Jeep shaft? Is it available from a dealer or trans parts store?

Different vendors sell these, including eBay.
You only want a 10 spline. Don't buy a 14 spline by mistake.
I bought mine from the 1st vendor below because he spent time on the phone with me to make sure it was what I wanted. Made some measurements and called me back, etc. He deserved my business.

T & B Transmission

This one is on eBay and a good price.

BowTieTim reminded me that there is a Tech Tip Article about the Jeep shaft swap. I had read through it more than a year ago but didn't think it would apply to me because I don't have a foot pedal starter. Others folks deserve credit, not me. I'm just documenting it with some photos.

The part number listed in the article is 1351085008. A Google search using that number will get several hits.

All I am getting at is asking a question about a Jeep T-5 for off-topic purposes without violating the policy. Now that the cat is out of the bag, I am looking into a 4X4 T-5 for a 235, and I need to know where the shifter will come through the floor. Sorry about the vagueness of my original inquiry.

OK, this answer should be pretty close.
The T5 case front to back is 9.25". The Jeep shifter base plate is longer than the S10/Camaro style. So making allowances for that and without explaining all of my math, the Jeep shifter stick should be centered about 14" behind the front surface of the case.

I found this chart with a Google search.
It says Jeep shifter is 329.4mm behind the front of the case. 329.4/25.4 = 12.97"

Bringing back an old thread I'm sure, I've ready through this but I'm still a little unsure on the application on this ..

Will the T5 with these mods to it be a direct bolt in minus I'm sure some cross member issues and the shifter being in a different location for a 1952/216 3100 Chevy Pick up that already has a 4SPD, which is the original one. It has an open drive train, and I'd really like to keep the starter on the floor where it is.

First post, I've been lurking for some time though, lots of good information to be had here. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide
