I have see a few HEI Distributor conversions done on Chevy motors an was wondering if you can do the same with a GMC motor. I have a 1958 270.

Thanks in advance for any advice. smile

That is a good question.... Where are you GMC guys at on here??

You might be able to install a Pertronix in your stock distributor and use a coil. That does away with points and wear then.

I see an older post back in 2009, in the electrical forums, a fellow said he bought an HEI from Jim Carter truck parts for a GMC 270....

The distributors will interchange with Chevy distributors as long as the gears match the cam. So the later GM HEI modified for a Chevy can be used in a GMC.

I have run a Pertronix in my 248 for a bunch of miles.

You can convert the GMC distributor to HEI very easily. I had mine done by machining the points cam lobes down to fit a Ford reluctor wheel on it, then use a Dodge pickup sensor bolted down to the points plate. Mount a 4 wire GM module on the firewall or intake, use small HEI coil mounted same. Got a spare 270 distributor handy? good luck. Jim. A good write up in Hamilton Fuel Injection on Binder planet..
