6v for 1954 Chevrolet COE.
A black oval metal tag on starter and/or generator usually indicates 6v (red tag for 12v).
Check the head lamps - they might indicate 6v or 12v (or, have a ID/product code you can look up).

The 12 volt version had the cover bolts down much lower, centered on each end. | | |
