ok guys, I know that my 2 young autistic kids are going to be walking all over the running boards...

question here is what kind of materials do you guys recommend to put on the running boards?

I'm thinking bed liner, but the color on the bottum half of my truck is going to be white, and I've heard that bedliners done't do what very well; and if you do white it fades very quickly???

Don't know about other brands but the Duplicolor Bedliner in black also fades or gets kind of grayish after awhile. I don't know how chip shield would do on running boards, its like the stuff they used on rockerpanels and door bottoms. I know they made some brands of this chipshield that could be mixed with the paint color you were using. The advantage of this was if it did get chipped the color was clear through the coating. They do make it where you can spray it on , then topcoat it, but if it gets chipped it shows. The only problem is it takes a special gun to shoot it. The gun looks about like the ones they sell with bedliner coatings. smile

I've thought about using beliner... a lot of companies have a UV protectant you can spray on afterwards to keep it from fading.

I don't know how well this works though...

Used the Duplicolor brush on and spray bedliner on my 59 cab floor and steps. These are inside so will not be in the weather constantly. Still going together so cannot say how it will wear and hold the color. Stong stuff though so apply outside. Brush and roller cleanup impossible so buy cheap brushes and/or roller if you go with it.

this is something I need to decide which way I'm going to go fairly quick. I need to put home built steps on my k5, and I'm going to use it for a test bed.

I've thought about using the herculiner or something similiar, but haven't considered the rock guard.

how does the rock guard differ from the liners, and do you mean that you actually paint over top of the rock guard?

Just paint the dang things! I painted mine with Imron and they lasted for a couple years of people standing on them taking photos and all that rot and never got scratched up. They are supposed to be stepped on!

I would stay away from the " Herculiner " stuff. We put some on the company truck beds a year ago. It has faded real bad and is coming off one of them already. For what we spent, we could of had them spraded and got a warrenty. Just my $.02 , Joe

they have some UV protectant stuff on their web site that is suppose to restore color as well as protect it from fading etc...

but the color I would want is gray, and it is $39 more a gallon then the black taking the total to $139 per gallon! eek

I have a shop here that will spray it for almost the same price I could buy it for. I could have saved some $$$, but not much. with the gray being more I can probably do it for the same price if not cheaper.

I'll just have it ready, and take it up there to have it sprayed.

I would paint them and then put on the anti-skid stick-on strips. They can be replaced when they wear and the kids won`t slip ,fall and bust their heads on the side of the truck !!
