Or is water/exhaust heat just on split headers?

If it's something I should have (I'm in MN) what parts should I get?

If your using a stock manifold and the heat riser valve still works it should be fine. I believe new bi-metal springs are available for them if your old one is broken or rusted.

Well I know I need some kind of heat, but I meant do I need additional heat over what's supplied by the heat riser on the stock setup.

If you have the stock heat riser working that is all you will need. Make sure it is free and wouldn't hurt to install a new spring. You can go to National Chevy in St Paul, they are on Arcade St.
