Miss Church,

1019S8274A

You might have tried to use the information on on this website, but your sequence does not seem to completely match. Maybe someone else can interpret this?

10 = 1/2T, 1 = 114" short bed, 9 should indicate engine
see here, GMCs are confusing smile

101= 1/2T short, next letter can be engine or assy plant, engine is either blank (6) or 8 for V8 (no 9's), if it's assy plant it's C, P or S (no 9's).... If I wanted to go out on a limb, I would say it's not a 9. The S is correct for 1958/1959 and the rest is sequence serial number. Have not seen "A" at end of USA GMC. Have owned 3. You say it's a USA vehicle and you are sure it's not Canadian.
Canadian GMC's did have different numbering and they DID have "9" for 1959 and they DID have "A" at the end for GVW less than 6000. But they didn't seem to start out 101 as USA did. So misread, misprint or Hybrid number/hybrid truck. What wheel base is this Panel? Should be 114". Is serial plate on driver hinge pillar or outside firewall or just on Title?

Perhaps it was misread; am doing this on behalf of a colleague and will examine it myself and report in due course. It is a panel, not a short box pickup

Yes a Panel, they made a long 1 Ton Panel also in 58, just wanted to be sure the actual Panel matches what the Serial says. A 101 Panel is the same wheel base as a short box pickup. Hoping the fourth digit is an "8", and the last digit is a "4".

It turns out nos. came from ownership (title) papers, not door jamb (serial no. plate missing). Therefore it was either misread at some point or, more likely, title is incorrect. Thank you for the assistance

Yes 1/2T short, 6 cyl, Pontiac, MI, 58274 should read S8274. (101 P S8274) the 7273rd off the line, I believe they started with 1001 or 1000.
The "A" is an anomaly. I do not believe the plate is original. I believe the plate was redone by someone. You can buy those plates. They misread something somewhere. and stamped it wrong. I hope your friend has a Title in their name and I hope that if it was reconstructed, it was done through the DMV. If so, they would issue a new plate in most cases in U.S.
If I was looking to buy it, I would be very concerned about the documentation. Like, why is the plate off the truck? Why does it not match the papers, etc. At any rate, I guess all you want is to cypher the serial. It is not altogether a proper number as far as I can tell. I have seen Chevy trucks with the "shadow" of the number behind the plate where they stamped the plate after it was installed, therefore indenting the pillar metal also. You may want to look there, GMC may have done that as well.

Yes, the 5 is actually an S (incorrect on ownership)

the A continues to be a mystery (checking today for shadow)

foregoing responses all greatly appreciated

The first one was 1001 so number 8274 is the 7274th one.
