I am missing the dipstick and tube for my 292. Are they the same as a 250 ??

Anyone have an extra to sell ?

Hy Bigdreamer, according to the parts book as long as you use the two pieces that are meant to work together you should be able to use either six cylinder setup, hope that helps.

Thanks, that kind of makes sense. I measured both pans and the 250 is 6-6 1/2 deep and the 292 is 8". I guess it wouldn't matter if the stick didn't go all the way to the bottom of the 292 pan if the full level is the same. If the oil is off the stick, I got big problem... frown

Hy Bigdreamer, if you knew the original application of the 292, I might be able to be more specific. With a deep pan like that I would say that a 250 would not have been available in the application your 292 came from, hope that helps.

Not sure on the 292. It's an early '76 casting and I think it came out of a farm truck, like C60.
The 250 is a '68 out of a pickup.

Level should be the same, just fill it with 8 quarts and see where it hits on the stick. Oil should not be up the crank.

That's the problem, I have no dip stick or tube. If the 292 takes a special one, I would rather find that than use just any old thing.

I have a broken 250 block with a tube if you want a measurement. I can also install the dipstick from my working engine and measure where the level is.

Hy Bigdreamer, I measured a 292 I had here, the pan is 8 3/8" deep, the dipstick tube is 12 3/4" long from the engine block surface to the tip, the dipstick is 21 3/16" from the tip to the edge of the metal cone which slides over the dipstick tube, the full mark is 19 5/8" from the metal cone, the add mark is 20 1/4" from the metal cone, hope that helps.

That is EXACTLY the info I needed !!!! The tube in the current 250 is only 5 1/4 long and I nearly have to stand on my head to reach down for it. I have an ad in the "wanted" section for a 292 dipstick assembly.
THANKS... chug

I am new to this forum, but was wondering if this thread was still active. My '68 292 has a short dipstick tube (5 5/8 inch), and correspondingly short dipstick (14.25 inch). When I go thru all the numbers from 3B above mine is about a quarter inch different in the full level. My concern though is that after putting 6 quarts in I am reading about a half inch over full. Any thoughts?

Make a new mark on the dipstick.

I was wondering if this is normal for the 292. My dipstick is in the back on the passenger side. I am using a 1 qt oil filter, STP S5XL, and changed the filter prior to putting in 6 qts. I have not had the truck that long so don't have the history of it.

When I built my 292 it had no dip stick and a couldn't find an NOS or after market for an inline six. I used a dip stick and tube from a SBC and did just as Ed suggested and remarked the level. I haven't had any issues with doing that.

While I have the numbers in front of me: my dipstick tube is 5 5/8 inches long from the block, the dipstick is 14 1/4 inches from the tip to the edge of the bell, the ADD mark is 7/8" from the tip, the FULL mark is 1 1/2 inches from the tip. My FULL mark should be 6 1/8 inch below the block end of the tube. The FULL mark on the other 292 mentioned in this thread should be 5 7/8 inches from the block end of the tube.
