I don't have flywheel off yet to look | | | | | Joined: Jul 2013 Posts: 200 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jul 2013 Posts: 200 | Not to be an alarmist, but when the cam breaks(usually from a spun or broken connecting rod), it pushes the section closest to the rear of the engine backward and can knock it out. Does the engine rotate freely or make any knocking noises, or is it seized up?
We cannot solve our problems today using the same thinking we used when we created them!

| | | | | Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 5,206 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 5,206 | If they tried to change cam gears while still in the engine, I could see them knocking the plug out and doing damage to lifters. It takes heat and or lots of pressure to install cam gears, if a hammer was used, you can bet something was damaged.
Pull the side covers and lifters and check them closely. The cam should not have enough free travel to hit the frost plug if the gear and retainer plate are on right. If they forgot the retainer plate, the front of the block or back of the gear should really worn.
