That engine had the passenger side pan rail bulged out like the 1955 second series-63 engines(1953-55 first would be straight down both sides). I would check the pan rails to confirm. I just re-looked at the pictures of this engine and see a raised circle above the starter. I have seen this marking on another engine which was reported to be a 261(maybe Canadian).

Does this answer your question? | | | | | Joined: Jul 2013 Posts: 363 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jul 2013 Posts: 363 | yes it does. thanks so much | | | | | Joined: Jul 2013 Posts: 363 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jul 2013 Posts: 363 | | | | | | Joined: Dec 2000 Posts: 3,399 Gas Pumper | | Gas Pumper Joined: Dec 2000 Posts: 3,399 | Yeah, all I can say is, the numbers, if read perfectly, is a 54/55 261. Since dirt and debris can change a 3 to an 8 or whatever, if its clean, and these numbers are good, its a 261.
I have seen so many anomalies with these trucks in parts, if seems that every now and then, maybe its Friday, the GM employee does the wrong thing and all comes together anyway. Maybe those captains bars are there.. you just cant see them. Let us know when you have taken the engine to an engine shop, had it shot peened and magnifluxed, and cleaned. Maybe it will all become apparent. Good luck! If its a 261 its a nice engine! | | | | | Joined: Jul 2013 Posts: 363 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jul 2013 Posts: 363 | thanks dave shot peened and magnifluxed what does that mean | | | | | Joined: Apr 2014 Posts: 924 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2014 Posts: 924 | Wrench Fetcher, PhD | | | | | Joined: Jul 2013 Posts: 363 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jul 2013 Posts: 363 | | | | | | Joined: May 2010 Posts: 43 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: May 2010 Posts: 43 | Jimbo, got caught up in your thread and one of the pictures triggered me to send you one more bit of info you may need. On the 261's it is crucial to have the oil passages on the block either run direct to each other, or through an oil filter, before you run it. Google chevrolet 261 engine, and you will find this mentioned in several places. Jim Carter has a great article called "The forgotten 261" Good luck with your truck!!

jimbo,
There are two oil filter lines. Those lines should not be to a port that has water inside.
There is a post on the block between the two oil ports. That post is the pivot for the throttle rod bell-crank. If you remove that post/bolt, coolant will come out. Some blocks have holes for two different pivot-post locations - one hole gets used for the post and the other hole gets a pipe-plug.
