I have found under the transmission cover plate some sort of gasket it's like a cardboard plate, it looks like it's maybe used to hold the gear shift foam seal and emergency brake seal up to the cover. I have looked through a couple of parts books and found no mention, can this be ordered from somewhere or do I need to make something up?

Hi Tim; I just posted a picture of the cover and gasket. I have both foam seals for the shifter and Ebrake I'm looking for the gasket or what ever it is called.

I found the heavy paper gaskets for the access panel insufficient. I used 1/4" thick by about 1" wide neoprene weatherstrip tape as a gasket.

Is this it: (1947-54) Transmission Floor Cover Gasket Set - as posted above by David, the last set I bought was like heavy roofing underlay/tar-paper?

I didn't like that one Tim. It was so flimsy and I couldn't see where it was serving much purpose. I would like to see a one piece rubberized one. David's idea is pretty good.

Yep, there was a heavy felt paper full sheet under my transmission
cover, which was still stuck to the bottom of the cover with tar.
It' was much heavier than the 30lb. roofing paper edge gaskets
that the vendors are pawning off on us.
I belive if the truck originally came with an SM420 from the
factory it had the full sheet gasket under the cover. I've seen
quite a few which had them but not to many were still in tact
because water got under and or they were tore out just leaving
the edge around the flange. My thoughts are that they served a
dual purpose, first a gasket second as a sound deadener over
the transmission. All that I've see were form fit to the cover
shape and that's what I tried to duplicate on the new one that
I made for mine.
So Doyle what you got there is an original 4speed
transmission cover gasket, which isn't being reproduced
by any of the vendors. As I said, mine was a heavy
felt paper I would guess about twice as thick as
standard 30lb. asphalt impregnated roofing paper.
Yours appears to be made of a treated paper but not
treated with asphalt. It may be because it's a 1ton
or because of which plant it was built in.
I've been looking for nearly a decade but have yet
to find a source for felt paper heavier than the 30lb.
Anyone know of a source please let me know.

I cut thin strips of roofing paper to put between the pillars and the back of the cab (interior padding) but to keep them from falling out, I had to put three strips in each one. I would like to find a rubberized product to cut some of this out of.

A friend from Manhattan once gave me a piece of padding he had
left over from his restoration. It was that thick felt padding
like was used on the toe board, in the roof and that strip
behind the seat around the belt line. Don't know where he got
it but it was from one of the vendors I'm pretty sure. I've not
seen it stocked by any of them since.

Thanks Denny and all of the other comments or suggestions as to what to do here.
A few years ago working in the LTL trucking industry we did haul around some cardboard/foam board for a concrete company I think it was used for insulation under a building pad, just wonder if they might have something that will work for this application.
I don't know the exact mileage on my 50 but the more I uncover and restore it I think it really has to be very low mileage for something like this to survive.
