Well I saved another one from the crusher....but need some clarification on ID.

Dated June 27 1955 block casting (F275)... it is a complete engine with 3 speed, xx848 head, generator, dizzy and stomp starter from a pickup being hot rodded.

My question....
serial # is 0677545 F55Y What does the "Y" stand for..??

The other oddity is the valve cover.... a typical 235 4 screw model has four slots cut out of the top section near the front and rear similar to a 216.... and of course no other breader cap just a plain flat cap. When did they stop using these breathing slots....?

Now that we have made a stand for it we are planning to get it started just out of curiousity.

Thanks

Bob C.

Pre '68 Dave, the valve cover with cap in the center, was that all engines or trucks only?

I prefer the oil filler cap at the front. Reason being the engine sits slightly high at the front. Gravity.

I rebuilt a 1954 235 engine and sold it for a decent profit a few years back. I was very surprised at the way Chevy built that one year only motor. Open slits in the valve covers (letting dirt in like the older models), the oil pump/screen system is different as is the oil pan. Turns out, they were using parts from the older model years I guess until stock ran out. A very nice motor, but very different from later years. I cant remember what else was different, but it was a little different.

Wow..... Thanks everyone for all the information.

So if it came from a 1/2 ton pickup truck, it had a previous life in a car with a powerglide.

Will keep you posted if I can get it started.

Rescued another one. Has one bad cylinder wall (#4) pitted with rust in the top 30%....but it turns.

I think I have most of the information sorted out but would like confirmation and some explanation for strange mix of parts.... price was right..free.

Rescued as a 1953 low oil pressure.

Numbers show differently..
Block casting # 3692713....1952
Head casting # 3835909...again 52
casting code inside the valve cover...which I may have miss read C164 .. which I decode as March 16 1954....??? doesn't fit 1952??

Block as the low pressure oil cover on the carb side of the block..... but has a short side valve cover...... the top valve cover is the two acorn front vent as per Pre-68Dave info.

When did they start changing from the tall side cover to the short one...??

Serial # by the dizzy is Y24340 which I read as intended in a previous life for a powerglide although it is currently bolted to a 3 speed tranny.

Thanks for the great education in 6 cyl. philosophy!!!

A nice visual guide to stovebolt identification can be found at http://pugetsoundvintagechevrolet.org/Programs/6%20cylinder%20engines%20with%20photos.pdf It may have been referenced before but is a nice summary.

Grant,

That link is to an excellent time-honored 2007 presentation that Pre '68 Dave gave to/at a Puget Sound Region Vintage Chevrolet Club of America meeting/program.

Bob C,

The short vs tall side covers were different for USA vs Canadian trucks.

Far-Northerners have noted that short side covers were used on later Canadian 216s. Short side covers were never used on USA 216s - they were used on 235s, starting with the low-pressure 235s in 1950.
