53 3100 with 261 hei. after driving about 60 miles today it started to run rough. was pulling into a friends service garage and it died so i coasted in. It stared up but after awhile would die again. Tried to continue to drive home but if i accelerated much it would start to run rough and die. Made it back to buddys garage. He looked it over and said it was probably the pick up coil. called tom langdon and described the problem to him and he also said pick up coil. anyone else have a probelm with the pick up coil in langdons hei dist. it only has 230 miles on it.

Maybe consider checking the fuel filter? Just a thought.

I agree with ndkid. My experience with any electronic ignition parts is they either work or they don't.Larry

The entire system is new, tank, pump, filter, lines. Filters full and flows.

Vented or non-vented tank?

Did you fill up fuel at your normal place? (bad gas) Just a thought if everything is new and all electronics are good. I had that happen once and thought it was the fuel filter.

Yep, could be bad gas as well, or vacuum in the tank (does the tank suck for air when you take off the cap?). But I would try the pickup coil, especially if langdon is telling you that.

bought my gas at the normal place i get gas. never thought of the tank and vacuume. it has the small tube running beside the large one to the gas neck, i assume thats the vent tube. if the tank had a vacuume wouldn't it starve the pump and the filter would not stay about half full. Landon is sending me a pickup coil at the price of shipping. i'll try that just to be sure.

If the new pick up coil doesn't fix your problem try a new gas cap.


One day on my way home my truck started bucking on acceleration.
The seal on the gas cap was cracked.
Picked up a new gas Cap at autozone and it fixed my bucking problem.

It's either fuel or electric so I'd add fuel to carb to see if she keeps running. I had similar problem, turned out to be bad float in carb, also check fuel filter. Clear fuel filters BTW are great, you can see junk in the line.

Ok, replaced pickup coil today. took it out for a spin and afer about 15 minutes of driving it died. I was stopped on the street talking to a neighbor who restores cars telling him what i had just done when it was like someone turned off the key. We popped the hood looked around there was fuel in the filter. I restarted and it idled for a while and died again. As soon as it did I took the gas gap, which is new also, off and there was no sound from it. I restared it drove around for a while came back to the neighbors pulled up and it died again. Now i'm starting to think it might be a bad coil. The langdon kit comes with the square coil but i got the optioal round coil. Should i have gotten the square coil in the first place. Those of you running the langdon setup what coil did you go with.

I think the problem has been solved. I stuck a different coil on it. Drove around for quite awhile and it ran fine. Talked to Tom Langdon before I made the switch and told him the pickup coil didn't change anything. He told me to try a square coil instead of the round one. I had a square coil so i put it on. So far so good.
