i have been doing research on the antique and classic registrations. help me out on this: from what i have read if i get antique i can only drive it to car shows and couldnt run to lowes in it? would they really give you a ticket for that?

That would depend on the officer. If you just stopped and picked up a couple of items he probably wouldn't bother you. If you were hauling a load of lumber home he probably would ticket you. I have run errands in mine, stopped at places and bought stuff, even groceries and have never been questioned.

unless you drove it to work ever day and same cop noticed you wouldn't get stopped, other then that, no problem..

you could be driving after tune up or maintenance..you could be going for a burger, they dont care....just dont make it a daily thing and like I said, no problem... I drove mine a lot in a city where they love to give tickets, never stopped me

if you live in a really small town and all the cops knew you, then that might be a problem... put the plates on and dont worry about them..save you big bucks

Anyone know/understand the Texas regs regarding the use of YOM (Year of Manufacture)plates? Are they subject to the same stupid restrictions as the "antique & classic" plates?

Yom can be issued either way. If you want antique registration you get a little tag and sticker to attach to the tag. This has the use restrictions. If you register for daily use you get a window sticker and must also get an inspection sticker.

would it be very difficult to get a texas title that's in my brothers name with the motor number as the vin, changed to my name using the serial number on the door post data plate?

i changed the motor and got rid of the old one before i knew about texas using motor numbers as the vin on the title.

the truck is a 53

to even make it your vehicle, they have a lot of forms that can take care of things, is it a sale, is it a gift, is it an even trade, all kinds of good stuff to deal with..

I agree, the DMV will need to answer that one.

If you live in a small town, go to your tax assessor's office. If they don't know they can call the DMV. Or if you are near Austin, the DMV is on Parmer just past Dell Computer.

But there is no one at the DMV that remembers that a 53 was titled by motor number. All you can do is stamp the motor number to match the title. Thats what was done 60 years ago and thats all you can do now. When we bought GMC short blocks in the 50's and 60's, they came with only the 3 digit displacement and the installer stamped in the rest. We usually replaced 228 motors with 248 short blocks. In fact in the late 50's, 228 short blocks became no longer available. We ground off the 248 and stamped the motor number to match the title.

Don't even try to change the title to the number in the door jamb. You will have to do any title transfer in the tax assessor's office in the county where you reside. All they are concerned about is the sales price so they can collect the 6 1/4% sales tax and $28 title transfer fee.

The lady at the DMV office advised me that half her male coworkers drive their antique-plated vehicles daily with no problem (Belton, TX office). I have Year of Manufacture plates on mine and I believe the reg says you can drive YOM/antique-plates to shows, parades and FOR MAINTENANCE; if ever stopped by a cop I can always honestly say, "Officer, I just adjusted/fixed/rebuilt the _______ and I'm out on a test drive." I've hauled all kinds of stuff in mine but never any problems. A cop tailed me once but eventually peeled off--I think he just wanted a closer look at a cool old truck.

just hope you dont get a copy that knows when you go to work,
because if he watches you he might stop you...

and if he is an ex navy guy, you for sure might be in trouble..lol

I have been doing some homework myself and it can also benefit my fellow Texans.
Here is what I have come up with.

Click here on the TXDMV.gov

Scroll down and you'll see a "Motorist Toolbox" to the right.

Click on the "Registration Manual."

This will lead you to opening a PDF file.

Open the PDF file of the "Registration Manual."

Perform a smart key function of "ctrl+F" and that will perform the find function.

A box will appear on the top right side of the file.

Type in "Chapter 21," then hit the enter button.

This will take you to the "Chapter 21-Miscellaneous Specialty License Plates," that will answer may questions about antique, classic, custom, and street rod.

I had antique plates and got pulled over by my neighborhood cop, told him I put new plugs in... Two weeks later he saw me again and came by the house. Was polite but told me I really need to change the plates. I got tired of worrying about the ticket and got classic plates.

Texas sounds like a tough place for collector cars. In Georgia they just want the money & you can drive your vehicle whenever & wherever you wish.
You can run year of mfr plates but you have to have a regular tag in the trunk to prove you are registered. The year plate will cross reference the regular tag.
