I'm going to take it a part again and check if the needle moves i know it did when i had it apart earlier I love my truck never boring!!! With the key ON, you should be able to pull the wire off the sending unit and have the dash gauge swing to FULL.
Leave everything the same, but ground that same wire to a good, shiny ground and the dash gauge should swing to EMPTY.
If this happens, it means the dash gauge is good and the wire from gauge to sender is good.
The dash gauge needs to be grounded in the dash through its case, and the sending unit needs to be grounded, either through the grounded tank or sometimes a additional wire from one of the attaching screws on the sending/float unit.
Intermittent operation is sometimes a red flag that the contact between wiper and coil is marginal as the gas sloshes around. This usually means a new sending unit is in order.
The gauge needs a good tight connection to power for it to read consistantly. I wouldn't hesitate to tap on the gauge the next time it went on strike...maybe you will wake it up.
I did a search using the phrase "fuel gauge", and per Paul's instructions, I did enclose it with quotes just as I did above. I also changed the 'search limit' to 1 year. This produced millions of good hits dealing with the fuel gauge issue. Good luck.

Thx we can always depend on you. I'll test it this afternoon. I have tried to use the search feature here but only get a blank screen. I've tried with two seperate computer systems and get the same thing, blank.
