I bought a '50 knowing the engine was bad ,
cranked it up when I got it & he was right, its a knocking ....Took a close look this morning and noticed P.O. had by -Passed the filter . He cut the rubber hose in half . He added a tubing in place of the filter ...
With the filter gone the oil just circulated . now without a tiny hole that's in the filter he starved the bearings , Is my theory correct ????

As I understand it the filter catches less than 50% of the oil flow so any back pressure it creates means nothing to the rest of
the system... So I'm gonna say "No"...

I think with the filter gone , 100 0/0 recirculates back to the pan ... ( I'm just thinking out loud ) I bet we find out from somebody ....

Yes, definitely! The normal flow goes through a 1/16" restrictor orfice in the filter standpipe which prevents much pressure loss. Running a 1/4" diameter line right back to the oil pan with no restriction will seriously starve the bearings, particularly if we're talking about a splash-oiler. You might get away with taking some shims out of the rods and tightening up the clearances if it hasn't pounded the crankshaft out of round already. Drop the oil pan and do a good inspection of the crankshaft- - - -you might be surprised at how tough those old cranks can be!

A 1950 might have a splash-oiler 235, but if it's had a newer engine transplanted, no. Once an insert-bearing engine starts knocking more than a slight rattle, there's usually crankshaft damage. If the engine is a 54-up 235, count on a rebuild, and possibly a replacement crankshaft.

I already bought a running ,non knocking engine for the coupe ,.with a '64-'65 4 speed muncie It had a '54 corvette exaust , Its on e-bay now , the higher it gets the better deal I made .1 thing I know I'll never bypass the filter on a 235 . Good thing about the knocking motor its got a 848 head ....

Putting a spin-on filter adapter on without restricting the oil lines somewhere will do the same thing. The filter flows much more oil right back to the pan than the engine gets. When I do that conversion, I use a Holley carburetor main jet as a restrictor.
