A local mechanic (who is not an "old car" mechanic) listened to it and said he thought it was some sort of bushing. The sound only occurs when driving on rough terrain (dirt driveway or town roads). Does anyone have any ideas what the source could be?

He wanted another opinion. Two of us took it for a drive around a large pot holed parking lot across the street. When we started to hear the noise, I got in the back seat to listen closer. The noise was definitely there, so we put it on the lift for a look see. Found a stone wedged in the frame. Took it out and all was well. He was most thankful.
