I bought a new sending unit for a 86 full size Blazer tank that I installed in my 49 Sub. This was in May of 05. It does not have the internal fuel pump. There are 2 electrical connections on the sending unit. Naturally since it is now 2 years ago and my memory leaves a lot to be desired I can't remember which terminals are which. I hooked up what I think is the ground wire. It has a spade connector on the unit and I attached the other end to the truck frame after grinding the paint off in order to get a good ground. This wire came already made up with terminals on both ends. It was black and about 16 gage so I assumed it was a ground wire. The other terminal is a small brass (or brass plated) stud projecting out of the top of the sending unit. It looks like it would take some sort of push connector since the stud has no threads. Would this be the connection that goes to the gas gage? I found the receipt for the sending unit and tomorrow I will have my NAPA guy look it up and see if he knows how it should be wired. In the meantime-------HEEELP!! Weeds

Weeds,

Your description of the terminals would certainly make me think you have their functions pegged properly. If the sending unit is still on the bench, so to speak, wouldn't a visual inspection show clearly what the plated stud attached to on the flip side.

But don't expect it to work properly if you have the original gas gauge. Do a search and pay attention to 30 Ohm and 90 Ohm gauges.

Ato & Baldy, thanks for the replies. I need to get the wire to the gage installed before I put the body back on. Afterward I think it would be inaccessable. Since the body is off I can remove the sender if I need to and check it out but first I am going to check with my NAPA guys. I have new Dolphin gages so I am hoping the resistances match up. Weeds

you got to make sure of that, I would think if it is the orginal sender, it wont,,,,,,,,,I installed after market guages on my 52 with new sender, suspose to match but had incorrect label sender in a box..........got it straighten out but took a while to figure it out.. mine was from napa and they were good about trying to find out the problem,

You can get a pigtail to go on that term. Ford used a lot of them on oil senders. You will have to pinch it in a little. I dought if a factory sending unit will work with the Dolphin gauge. Usually a sender comes with that type gauge. Often you have to use an adapter for some models. You might call the Dolphin people & see.

Joker and wrench, thanks for the replies. I bit the bullet and took out the sender that came with the tank. I ruined the clincher retainer thingie that holds it in the tank. Set the whole shebang up on the bench using the Dolphin gas gage wiring diagram and the Dolphin gas gage and guess what darn thing works just like its supposed to. Went back to NAPA got a new gasket and retainer thingie and put the sender back in the tank. Also bought the pigtail terminal that fits on the mystery terminal. 7 bucks total. Don't know what the correct Ohms are supposed to be but I don't care as long as it works. Isn't it wonderful when you read the directions? Weeds
