what is the capacity of the seat tanks on the 61 GMC pickup? I have been driving it the last 3 days. running about 120 miles a day- averaging around 10.8 gallons a day. the old 305 is thirsty but it keeps going and going.I'm holding it around 60 to 65. every day was a bad headwind on the return run. 2 days really bad dust storms with it.if I can get the play out of the steering box to where I don't have to herd it so much I'll feel fairly comfortable except at the gas pump.get lots of good comments anyway.

17.5 gal or an optional tank of 20.5 gal, you won't make 2 days grin

thanks- that is sure true. I hope to pull the fuel gag sending unit out this weekend and see if it is repairable. if not looks like LMC gets some more bucks.

Herd it... now that's an excellent way to phrase it! thumbs_up

Have you bought any parts from Classic Parts? I find them to be much better than LMC from a customer service perspective and often times more cost competitive too. They also have The Classic Part Forum

There is a "sector gear preload" adjustment bolt on the opposite side of the steering gear from the Pitman arm. It is adjusted by loosening the locknut and turning the center bolt to take the slack out of the worm and sector gears at the "high point" right in the middle of the worm gear's travel. There's a pretty definite procedure to get it adjusted properly, so don't just start cranking the adjustment screw down.

Ideally, the adjustment should be made with the Pitman arm or the drag link disconnected, but if the front wheels are off the ground with the axle on jack stands the procedure is almost as accurate. Count the number of turns of the steering wheel lock-to-lock, and turn it back halfway. At that point, any movement of the steering wheel rim, even an inch or less, should result in movement of the Pitman arm. If not, start tightening the adjusting screw until you can feel a slight "high spot" just as the wheel crosses the center point. An inch-lb. torque wrench on the center nut of the steering wheel should show a rise in turning effort of 10 in./lbs. as the gear rocks over center. If you don't have a torque wrench handy, you can "feel" the difference in turning effort with a fingertip on the wheel as you turn across center. If the wheel gets tight/loose/tight as you cross over center, the worm gear is worn out and the steering gear needs to be replaced. Good luck!

I was able to repair my sending unit by soldering in a piece of solid 14 gauge copper wire to replace the broken piece of copper. Still works after 8 years.

well I put almost 500 miles on her this week hauling about 1200# or a little more of equipment in the back so she's officially broken in. I am thinking I'll try to pull the steering gear out pretty soon and see if there is anything I can repair or build up to help. the adjusting screw is down almost halfway below the top of the locknut. there is definitely way too much play left to do more with that. does anybody know what years of the manual steering gear box interchange with the 61? I would assume that a 3/4 ton would use the same box as a half ton but maybe not. anyway we'll have to see if there is anymore I can do to it other than replacement.
