Was driving my 53 to get it inspected today and of course it was raining and turned on my wipers and the little arm that attaches to the wiper knob fell off and landed on the floor. Is this common.

It only happens to me when it rains. The rubber part that holds the L-shaped part of the linkage won't hold the linkage in place. There isn't a hole all the way thru it. Seems to me that there should be. When my back stops hurting from the last time I crawled under the dash to work on it, I will take out that rubber piece and punch a small hole in it to allow it to go thru further and I will keep the hole small enough to grip the linkage. I will keep you posted. It may be a while if it doesn't rain soon, as the jinx only raises its ugly head when it rains. BTW, I enjoy following your journey even in bits and pieces, as you are encountering every single issue which I have encountered at one time or another.
