I got a gasket set the head gasket other gaskets fit. but the cork oil pan gasket is like it is shrunk some and not cut curved is there a way to salvage it by stretching ?? and whats the best adhesive to stick it to the block? thanks | | | | | Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 1,636 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 1,636 | Sometimes placing the cork gaskets in warm water for few minutes will help.
You'll get a multitude of answers on what to use. But I don't usually put a sealer on the block. I make sure it's clean and dry. It's easier most times to clean the edges of the pan should you have to remove it than it is to scrape the block while in the truck.
But again, you'll get a lot of varied opinions on that.

It is a lot easier to clean it off a part on the bench than scraping it off the block (or transmission, etc.)
Soaking is a good idea, wipe dry before installing. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 5,337 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 5,337 | Up to 1954 the pan rails are straight. Only 1955-62 gaskets will fit the pan.

One thing about cork gaskets that should be discussed is that the engine oil is an intricate part of their sealing ability. A bone dry cork gasket won't seal very well. Oil soaks into the cork, causing it to swell and providing a good seal. That is why you don't want to put sealant on both sides of the cork, as this will prevent the oil from moving into the cork.
