Changing the rear axle end oil seals on a '46 Chevy 1/2 ton and was wondering if I'm putting them in right since the Timken ones I got don't look anything like the old ones, especially since the old ones are pretty wasted. I was thinking the the side of the seal that has the rubber flush with the metal goes to the outside. Is this right?

Thanks in advance.

You should always go by the lip. The lip of the seal should point towards the oil side.

Each of these seals has a double lip. Maybe it doesn't matter which way they go. I've always installed oil seals with the flush side out because I figure if you'd put the side that has the gap out it would just collect dirt in that gap.

I recently replaced the oil seals on my 48 3/4 ton, as you describe (part number visible when installed)
