hello,

last summer i purchased a 1954 chevy 4400 stake 1.5 ton, or at least i was told. i have tried to research this truck but come up slim, but looks like the truck may be a 2 ton since it says gross weight is 16,000 lbs. the truck is purely canadian. so i was hoping someone could help me decipher the serial numbers and engine code.

heres the door placard numbers (having issues with my photobucket account)

model: 1543
serial: 4154300358
engine: T755478 (matches stamping on engine block)
body serial: 34
Paint 438

Any help would be greatly appreciated if someone can completely decipher these numbers.

Hy Elup, your truck is a Canadian 1954 1543 model, it has a 161" wheelbase, it is powered by a full pressure 235, and it left the factory as a chassis with cab. The comparable American model would be 4403 I believe, hope that helps.

Oh so it is a 1.5 ton truck if it is a 4403? I just found it odd the weight rating was 16,000lbs.

Hy Elup, if your front axle hub cap is an eight sided screw in type then it is a 1 1/2 ton, if the hub cap is bolted to the hub then it is a 2 ton (or someone has changed the axle). There are no comparable American models for some Canadian trucks, our 16 series (2 1/2 ton) and 17 series (3 ton) have no comparable American models as American Chevrolet trucks stop at 2 tons. Canadian 2 1/2 and 3 ton trucks are named Maple Leaf trucks, hope that helps.

Well in the front the center cap has 4 bolts holding it down. In the rear the center cap has 5 bolts holding it.

Anyone else opinion on this truck? 4400 (1.5 ton) or 6400 (2 ton)

Hy Elup, the chart I looked up the comparable American model in was in a 55B or 2nd series through 57 parts book, perhaps there is an error in the book or the earlier models didn't crossover the same way. At any rate a Canadian 1500 series is a two ton truck,hope that clarifies.

Oh okay! Well thank you very much. And that also clarifies why the hood has a 1500 badge on it. I wondered if someone changed it along the way since I always thought 1500 meant 1/2 ton truck
