I need to start off by saying I know nothing about carbs. Recently put a 235 out of a 62 Chevy Impala into my 49 pickup, 3 speed on the column. Engine seems to be good and strong, good oil pressure, holding temp good, no leaks. I got a Rochester along with the engine and was told that they did not think the carb was on the engine but would fit an it did. Truck starts fine but when it gets warmed up it starts missing. Checked air filter an it was nasty. Letf it off and drove to O'Reillys for a new one an truck drove much better, put new air filter in and started running bad again. Is this a carb problem? The Card has no numbers on it anywhere. It says Rochester Products on the Round disk that shows Rich and Lean, has a stainless tube coming out the side that runs down to the manifold, I am assuming to help heat up things quicker. Noticed when engine was running without the air filter, engine was running way faster at idle. So, is this the right carb for this engine, does it sound like I need to get a rebuilt kit or a new carb? Also how would I know what to ask for without any numbers. Thanks so much for any help or advice you guys can help me with.

Do you have a choke cable hooked up and functioning properly? It sounds like you have a carb that has / had an automatic choke setup on it. Did you install the correct base gasket for the carb that has the notch to align with the vacuum port? If you can post a picture of your carb on your engine we can maybe identify things better for you. Have you done any adjustments on the carb, checked the ignition system, checked the timing?

Hey Don Stocker, I do have a choke cable on my truck but did not us it because this carb does have an auto choke. I had to re drill the holes on the base gasket to make it fit, did not notice a notch on it, I have a vacuum port on the manifold that runs my vacuum wipers. I do question the base gasket but did not know what to ask for since I had no numbers on carb. I used the same base that was on the 216 but hole pattern was slightly off (too narrow) Tried to adjust two screws on carb one is on side of carb by valve cover and the other is on the linkage. Timing seems to be right on and truck always starts on first hit.

By the way, got myself a mirror and looked on the bottom of the carb and saw these numbers 7004497-C-2. Hope this will help. Thanks.
