I know the sm420 is strong but is it big torque strong? I am curious cause I would love to have the sm420 back in my 1ton instead of the th400. The adapter kit with clutch total 500$. But I don't want to destroy anything. My big block buick is producing over 500 lbs of torque over a wide early rpm. Peaking at over 550.
Edit... just realized should have posted in driveline section.... sorry.

The rock crawler crowd loves the 420 for a lot of the games they play. We also used them in the super stock truck classes in the tractor pulling game, and I don't remember too many hand grenaded transmissions. Unless you're running big slicks and treating every stoplight like a drag strip, there shouldn't be any problems.

Another option is the SM465. It may be a little easier to find. Would probably require the same install kit.

The 1st gear isn't quite as low, 6.5:1 vs. 7:1, but no sense in splitting hairs.

The SM465 takes a different bellhousing, it has a larger bearing retainer.

According to the kit it says it fits sm420/sm465. I have an sm420 now. My motor is not set up for manual trans yet anyways. For now , until funds are raised, th400 will be used I think, if i can get a torque converter here soon.

Have you thought about a hydraulic pedal?

Wilwood has a nice pedal setup. For the throwout you could use a bellhousing and slave cylinder from a mid 80's truck or, a bearing retainer mount style.

The Chevy Colorado used a slave that mounted on the bearing retainer, it may be adaptable to other transmissions.

It would be a heck of alot cheaper than the kits that are out there.
