im wanting to remove my ignition tumbler from the switch housing and give it a good cleaning and oiling, how do i get it out??/ there is a small hole in it thats for something like this but how???

What year? You should be able to insert the straightened end of a small paper clip into the hole and release the tumbler. That is the way to release the '64-'66 Chevy truck ignition tumbler. I hope this helps.

counter clockwise I believe, clockwise would leave the ignition hot

Insert paper clip into hole on tumbler face and use the key to turn the tumbler COUNTER clockwise until it stops; then it should slide out nice an easy.

It has to be in a certain position, which is different on different switches. There's a little button with spring tension behind the hole. If you don't feel it in one position, try another.

In the case of Dbone's '51, if I remember right, it only has off and on. It has to be turned on to remove the cylinder.
