How can you test whether the guage is bad or the fuel tank float is bad? I would love to solve this problem. I have a 54 as well and continue to have fuel gauge problems after a complete rewire job and several gauges and sending units.

Before searching, however, it might be good to check the Gasoline Gauge Problems troubleshooting table in the Shop Manual (below) and also check out Randy Rundle\'s Tech Tip on Gas Gauge Problems . Randy is the moderator of this Electrical Forum. The quickest test to see if a gauge is good is to disconnect the lead to the sender at the back of the gauge. If the gauge pegs to full (with the ignition on), you have a good gauge and your problem is elsewhere. If the gauge does not peg to full, the gauge might be bad or you might have other problems. This diagnosis is not simple. The biggest culprit is bad grounds (at the sender, and some say at the gauge). I will try the quick test first. | | | | | Joined: May 2006 Posts: 256 Member | | Member Joined: May 2006 Posts: 256 | When you do your search...there will be tons of answers, what happened to me is I put my tank in and I krimped the sending wire,upon further investigation my sending wire was very very old and Brittle..I ran new wires,ground also. So when you have exhausted everything else like I did...it turned out to be my own fault...and pretty simple.
