So I have 47 title, I have 46 Cab, and I have an id plate.
The id plate is new from Jim Carters and has a place
for a Chassis No.

The title I have shows a vin number.

How do I get put the vin number on the id plate.
is it etched, stamped what?

I have not seen a real one of these
so I don't know what goes there.

Psssst! hey, you might want to put the year your trying to look like. sounds like a 40s or older maybe?

They are stamped in as shown here. GMC and Chevrolet are unique plates but all are stamped, as stated above the year of truck is good for us to know as there are many subtle differences from year to year.

FYI, what you are doing is illegal in most states. However, having said that pay close attention to the two photos in Brads link above. Use the proper attaching method and place the plate in the proper spot for your '47 title. Not that anyone at the Colorado DMV will have a clue where it goes anyway. You might be just unlucky enough to get that one old codger who knows his classic trucks and busts you for altering the VIN Plate. Good luck.

I actually bought this truck from a highway patrol officer who did
everything to get the title. I have no idea why he got a 47 unless
one of the cabs was a 47.

The tag was not installed by the highway patrol like required
since he was a highway patrol officer.

This officer told me to just apply the tag after I finished
painting the cab and all would be good. I have all his
information if it were ever a problem, plus proof he
owned the truck.

used the frame from a 1980. I also have that title just in case.
But I do not want to have to pass emissions so I am not titling it as a 1980.

Where did you find that? I wasn't aware the feds could retroactively apply VIN laws to vehicles created prior to adoption of the laws. Actually I just did a little searching in the federal laws and did not find anything concerning salvage or reconstruction. FEDERAL LAW link

Also, most (states) emissions testing is not required on vehicles 25 years old and older. 1980 is now 34 years old, so you are good.

Stamp your VIN on the plate. Attach it in the proper location with the proper fasteners and call it good. Hopefully you won't get the VIN plate expert if and when it gets inspected. Is the truck going to look like a 47.1 and older or is it to look like a 47.5 and up? Personally I don't think you will have a problem since it is so old but you never know.

BTW, the illegal part is changing the VIN plate from the original. That's why re-builders keep the original VIN plate no mater how rough it is.

I am in the same position as you. Only 1 of my AD cabs has a VIN plate. I plan to do just as I've stated above if I ever get one going.

My truck was manufactured in January of 1947 in St. Louis but has the '46 body and cab style. It gets confusing sometimes since it is an Art Deco truck, not an AD. I think somewhere in the stovebolt gallery there is a post about keeping things simpler by just referring to the truck as a '46 even though it may have been manufactured in 1947. And in your case even titled as a '47. Thank goodness I still had the original VIN tag on the firewall.

It is a 1946 model that was delivered by GM in the 1947 calendar year.

GM considered the 1947 Advance-Design truck to be their 1947 model.

A registration/title would most likely indicate the calendar year?

Colorado and Oregon require emission on anything newer then 75.
The state I live in and the state I might live in.

But I am thinking later in life. I want it titled as a 47 for street
rod plates, resell value and if I move.

Correct. The truck was produced after the 46 cut off date and therefore
titled as a 47, even though it has 46 parts. This practice is still done today.

An example would be a 1999 in a half 2500.
The body is a 2000, engine is a 2000 6.0 but title is a 99.
It is pretty common for a vehicle to be released mid year or late year.
Makes buying parts fun if you don't know what you have.
