How do I hook up the Heater hose for a 1949 Chevy 3100 and if I'm not mistaken doesn't the valve assembly mount to the firewall inside the engine compartment?

It depends on what heater you have. There were dozens of heaters on the market in those days.

Cyril, the basic routing for all heaters is from the engine over to the inner fender and up to the heater tubes sticking out the firewall, and as Cletis says, the valve goes where the particular heater model dictates, ones that didn't include a valve sometimes had one added under the hood, or had a simple shut off in one of the heater hoses at the engine

Cyril,

Do you have the heater to the right in this picture (Air Flow)?

If so here is the routing and the valve installs against the firewall with just the tubes inside the engine bay.

If you have another type a picture would help.

Thanks a million. The second pic is the the one. I had the valve assembly rebuilt. So with this pic I should have heat when needed. Just one last question Does it matter which hose goes into the top or bottom of core?

I have a 49 3100 w/a period correct aftermarket Irvin recirc heater. It is as basic a heater as was offered. There is a cutoff valve mounted at the water pump to allow hot coolant to flow to the heater core in the cab.

The premium air flow type heater has a cab mounted temp control cutoff valve.

I guess I wasn't clear. The two hoses that go into the firewall, does the hose on right go to top or bottom of heater core?
