on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Apr 2009 Posts: 349 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2009 Posts: 349 | I am trying to resurrect an old truck. The fuel and brake lines look good but am wondering if I can clean them by just blowing air through them. Any tips appreciated. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,962 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,962 | Pouring some solvent through fuel lines doesn't hurt in case there is varnish build up. Not much besides blowing air through brake lines. If rust comes out, its best to replace them. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2009 Posts: 349 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2009 Posts: 349 | Thanks for the quick reply. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,851 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,851 | I like to flush brake lines with alcohol. Get a gallon of methanol (shellac thinner) at the local hardware store or big box store like Home Depot and pump a quart or two through the system with the master cylinder. Then follow with at least a pint of fresh brake fluid, and bleed the brakes as you normally would. Never, EVER put a petroleum-based solvent into a brake system! The residue will destroy rubber parts. Alcohol and rubber brake parts are pretty compatible, and any leftover alky will evaporate. Jerry

Just find your favorite local moonshine distiller and sample his product. I would recommend that your sampling start with the lines first. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 | Gene, if you're sure the lines are solid you can blow string thru them with your air gun then as the guys suggest, soak the insides with alky and pull your twine back and forth in a scrubbing motion. Somethin' like drying your butt with the bath towel. That should scrub any cobs loose and help to loosen any gummy buildup that may have accumulated. I then blow the lines dry. I do this also with new lines that I've make up, as it only takes a few minutes and assures that they're pristine inside.

Paul, why waste good shine? Take a big swig and then blow your breath through the lines! I've got a buddy who grew up in northeast Georgia back in the 1940's who makes something called "Old Huntin' Camp". He says it's "140 proof, aged in glass about 30 days". About 2 fingers in a water glass is enough for the whole night! Jerry
