I gently ran a wire wheel for only a few seconds to get off whatever gunk the wire brush couldn't get and I can't find any numbers. Is also doesn't look like they were grind off either. Just looks like they were never there. Now this is a 1942 built January or '42 I don't know if that makes a difference? I haven't tried looking for those other numbers yet. The engine is full of gunk and it's hard to check for these number with the fenders and all that still mounted. I may just have to wait.

Has anyone ever seen this? The GM and 48 are about as large as a half dollar.

The GMC 270 in the 54/55 GMC COE that we are "restoring" is a factory replacement engine. All that is pressed into the pad is "270". I do not know what (if anything) the Chevrolet factory replacement engines had pressed into the pad on the block.
The 235 that came in one of my 54 Chevrolet pickups had a donor replacement 1954 engine that has the engine serial number crudely ground off of the pad.
