| | THANKS!
For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Oct 2012 Posts: 20 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Oct 2012 Posts: 20 | I finally woke-up the 261 and now it is amazing how it runs. really sounds great. new valves, fuel pump, carburator rebuild, radiator hoses, battery,..., and new green paint on the head and valve cover.
next challenge: While running, I tried putting in reverse and letting out the clutch slow--it was like the hand brake was on and it died. tried again, same thing. I did not want to try forward, incase I could not get it back under the carport. This is a 6400 2-ton and has a hand brake as part of the drive shaft--the hand brake was off. The flat bed is a tip-bed with a PTO--that worked great.
about a year ago, I had it towed to the house with the drive shaft disconnected and the front wheels raised--although I don't think so, could there be a frozen wheel bearing?
the transmission shifts smoothly. one thing about the drive shaft brake--there is a shoe on the inside (which is released), is there suppose to be a metal pad on the outside of the drum also?
thank you. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2006 Posts: 2,544 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Nov 2006 Posts: 2,544 | You can put it in gear and let the clutch out and see if the truck will move or if it will kill the engine. It could be a brake locked to the drum keeping the truck from moving. You could also jack the rear of the truck up and use some cribbing to hold the tires off the ground. Then you could see if the wheels would turn without moving the truck. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 6,214 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 6,214 | My bet is the rear brakes are locked up...very common problem with trucks that sit for a long time. The hand brake with the inner shoe should have an outer shoe as well. Is there a round pin (attached to the lever arm that the inner shoe is attached to) on the outside of the drum? If so that's where the outer shoe connects. That will rule the brakes in or out. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2010 Posts: 1,159 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Nov 2010 Posts: 1,159 | On my T.F. 6500,the front wheels were adjusted out far enough, that it took a 4' cheater bar to get the wheels to move. I had to start out in "granny" gear, and by the time I shifted into 2nd,the truck was practically stopped. I backed the "star adjusters",just enough so I still have a slight drag on the hub. I agree with Mike. The rear brakes have 2 stars/wheel. Good luck! | | | | | Joined: Mar 2009 Posts: 93 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2009 Posts: 93 | Probably a brake. Make sure they all turn if not check to see if the thing is stuck in two gears. Pull out the shifter and look for the the shift slots. Make sure they are lined up. I've never seen this in a truck but my brothers WD tractor gets stuck in two gears sometimes. Will stall the engine faster than snot. Happens becasue the shifter is wore. Take out the shifter re-alight the shifting slots and start driving. Though if this is the case you may want to get it fixed. LOcking the trans in two gears going 55mph would likely be really bad.
