Does anyone know what the upper limit would be? I'm looking at putting a different engine in(a friend suggested one of the LS) but I'd like to keep the three speed column shift. I'm guessing the transmission is really going to limit me but just thought I would check.

Whenever you leave behind failure that means you're doing better if you think everything you've done has been great you're probably dumb

I don't think they put a 3 speed in a 1 Ton.

Three speeds weren't to heavy duty, at least not the ones used in the 1/2 tons.....
The 4 speed, is heavier duty, was used through the 50's into the early 60's....

I can't say for certain on GMC, but in some years, it was a delete option on Chevrolet.

A friend's 301 engine equipped 55 Chevy coupe went through plenty of the old-style 3 speed transmissions, but we drove that one like we stole it all the time. He finally scraped up enough pocket change to put a Muncie 4 speed in it and we didn't blow up transmissions so often.

Use a modern transmission, either a newer manual, or an automatic with the shifter on the column fabbed up to shift it.

I'd say the biggest limiting factor would be the universal behind it.... JOhn
