The ammeter should be your only connection between the battery post on the starter and the load, including the ignition switch and the alternator. In other words, only one wire goes from the battery terminal on the starter to one terminal on the ammeter and the other terminal on the ammeter goes to the load. Your ammeter should show a slight discharge when you turn on the ignition, unless the points are open, and go into the charge area when the engine starts.
