Sounds interesting. Maybe you're right about the new battery not needing any 'juice' yet. Without any lights or items online to pull from the battery, you won't see any discharge. It would seem to me even with a brand new battery that the ammeter should pop to + if only for a second or two.
As things progress in the wiring, all will be revealed.
