I've rebuilt all sorts of engines and never had a problem with honing effecting ring wear. Also never had rings not seat in.

I wipe the honing oil out, wipe the walls down naphtha or what ever is handy. Slobber oil on the rings and pistons so they slide through the ring compressor like butter and button it up.

I also use STP for assembly lube on everything that turns, slides or moves except the rings. Crank it with the plugs out until the oil pressure is up and start it up.
